Date Masamune had a younger brother. And I assume they originally got along, the younger brother looking up to Masamune because…he was his big brother. Then Masamune got sick with smallpox and lost his right eye. Suddenly, their mother viewed Masamune as worthless and doted endlessly on his younger brother. There were even rumors that she tried to poison Masamune so that she’d only have one son-the one she was proud of. Then Masamune finally got tired of it…and mysteriously, his mother and younger brother died at the same time. There are two theories: one, he switched his poisoned food with theirs. Two, he just plain outright killed them.
That was when he was 14. At 16, he went into battle for the first time, and at 18, he took over the army. BUT…he did so after being forced to kill his father to keep the Date clan lord out of the grips of their enemies. So…yeah. He lost his whole family before he turned 20.
AND….Oda Nobunaga had a younger brother as well. A younger brother who was favored by their father-although Nobunaga was their mother’s favorite. Nobunaga’s younger brother, along with two of his friends, rebelled against Nobunaga and waged war against him. They lost, and Nobunaga was ready to kill them all when their mother stepped in. As their mother, AND empress of Japan, she ordered them to cease the war and stand down. And they did.
Years later, Nobunaga sent word to his younger brother that he was gravely ill and wanted to see him one last time before he died. Putting aside their past grievances, his younger brother went to him as a loyal brother, and although the details aren’t mentioned anywhere, the fact was accepted that Nobunaga killed him. A theory I saw that I’d rather accept in this case was that he likely told servants to leave the room to speak to his brother alone, then took out a sword (Nobunaga was known as a demon king, and many lords in that era were known to keep weapons nearby them in case of assassination attempts) and killed his brother-likely unarmed due to the fact he thought he was simply paying his respects to a dying man.
….*sighs* I can’t help it, but I keep comparing them to Sam and Dean. Which is really crappy. I can’t help it now when I see things mentioning brothers….
